An advocacy group is circulating a list of 43 trade associations that Democrats can't accept campaign contributions from without violating their pledges to steer clear of corporate PAC money, Politico reported Tuesday.
Forty-three House Democrats have signed a pledge not to accept campaign contributions from corporate PACs, representing nearly a fifth of the Democratic caucus, according to the newspaper. Association PACs are generally not included in the ban, but the End Citizen United PAC has circulated a list of 43 trade groups that may violate the pledge because of their corporate ties. One lobbyist dubbed it the "trade association naughty list."
Among the groups on the list are the American Bankers Association, American Hospital Association and National Association of Chain Drug Stores. Politico did not list all 43 associations.
End Citizens United is a group seeking to limit the influence of corporate money in politics, taking its name from the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United decision that ended restrictions on independent expenditures in elections. The no corporate PAC pledge has frustrated some Democratic lobbyists upset with what they see as the arbitrary nature of which contributions qualify and which don't.
"There's no end to it," Democratic lobbyist Steve Elmendorf told the newspaper. "Next year somebody else is a demon." http://tinyurl.com/yysu7bx4
